Celebrating Juneteenth
Honoring the Significance of Juneteenth in Our optiMize Community
At optiMize, we are committed to building a community where individuals from all backgrounds feel empowered to create positive change. Juneteenth offers an important opportunity to reflect on our shared history, celebrate freedom, and recognize the resilience, contributions, and achievements of Black Americans throughout our nation's history.
“Juneteenth is a time to reflect. What does it mean to really celebrate our freedom? What does it mean to be free in moments where freedom is conditional, and freedom is always a challenge? Juneteenth is a moment to think about freedom being conditional freedom and it is something that we must continuously strive and fight for.” - Angela Tate, Curator of African American Women's History
Juneteenth is commemorated on June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. More than a historical milestone, Juneteenth is a chance to celebrate freedom, honor the resilience of Black communities, and reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. It encourages us to learn from the past while continuing to build a more inclusive future together.
At optiMize, we believe that meaningful social impact begins with understanding diverse experiences and learning from the communities around us. By celebrating Juneteenth, we recognize the importance of honoring Black history, amplifying Black voices, and fostering conversations that inspire learning, empathy, and action.
We also acknowledge the efforts of individuals such as Opal Lee, often known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," whose advocacy helped secure national recognition of the holiday. Her work reminds us that lasting change is often driven by individuals who remain committed to justice and community for generations.
As communities across the country gather to celebrate Juneteenth through educational programs, cultural festivals, performances, and service opportunities, we encourage our optiMize community to take time to learn, reflect, and engage. Whether attending local events, supporting Black-owned businesses, exploring Black history, or participating in community conversations, there are many meaningful ways to honor the spirit of Juneteenth.
For those in the Detroit area, numerous Juneteenth celebrations and community events provide opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate the significance of this historic day. We invite you to explore local events and continue reflecting on the meaning of freedom, resilience, and progress.
